About Me

Salutations!

My name is Emily Jeanminette and yes, my last name is French. Pronounced correctly it sounds out JAH-mee-neigh. My mother, sister, and I have roots here in Mobile but my dad is from Louisiana. He was born in a small town an hour outside of Lafayette called Jeanerette. I LOVE my heritage. It's pretty diverse and I love the fact that I have family members that have a Cajun accent. It's different from anything we hear in Alabama and is unique to South Louisiana. Anytime I hear someone with that distinct drawl, I can almost smell my Gramme's etoufee stewing on the stove...

Anyway, I just celebrated my 21st birthday two days ago. I'm not much of a party girl but I did make a point to go out and celebrate. I like going out but I never mind staying in and enjoying a peaceful night catching up on my favorite shows. I like anything on Fox and CBS but I especially love the Travel Channel. No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain is the best show on cable.

I love the show because I love to travel! Traveling, for me, is more like an obsession rather than a passion. I've been on cruises to Mexico and mission trips to Juarez. I've seen Paris at night and Times Square in bursting with activity in the morning. I've worn my shoes down in Chicago and seen the seals in San Francisco. I've also sat in the no so glorious airport in Amsterdam. Does that count? I hope to go to a parade in Boston on St. Patrick's Day this March. My goal is to travel as much as I can before I settle down to teach. Although, there's really no settling when it comes to being an educator.

I started my freshman year in college at the University of Southern Mississippi. Needless to say, I missed Mobile. No offense to any Hattiesburg natives, but that gray little town is not for me. I came home after my spring semester and decided to start at South as a nursing major. I began to to consider pursuing an education degree when I started babysitting almost full time because I had afternoons and nights free after class. I quickly grew to adore children. By the end of  Fall 2011, I had permanently changed my major to Elementary Education K-6!!

I've never been more excited about my future than I am now. I remember an acquaintance of mine telling me she wanted to become a teacher  because it seemed like the easiest thing for her to do.  I find this extremely alarming. I had a flashback to every bad teacher I've ever had the displeasure of learning under. Did they feel the same way? I even asked myself that question but quickly dismissed it. I am hoping to be the kind of teacher that shows up, not for the paycheck, but for the love I have for my students and their education. I want them to know that I want to be there and never question that. I wish to provide guidance and love to help steer them towards a more knowledgeable, wider and more stable future.

Randy Pausch:Time Management

I found this video very instructional. I have a problem with time management and tend to forget what is due and what I need to finish first. I always buy planners but always ending up ditching them after the first few weeks. I like that he made the suggestion to start with the ugliest thing on our to-do list. That way, we can get it out of the way. I've heard of Randy Pausch before when he was on the news for giving his last lecture. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007 and passed away in 2008. He was well known for being a terrific public speaker.

  1. Hi,Emily! Your last name has a really nice ring to it if I might say.I was going to go the nursing route as well, but I do not like to see people sick. I love to see children happy and for them to use their creativity and their imagination to show whether their outcomes come out they way they planned.Similar to my family,I love the fact that your family over. Most of the family members live in the state of Alabama. The farthest state me and my family have traveled to were San Antonio and Killeen, Texas. We went to Killeen, Texas years ago to celebrate Thanksgiving with my uncle's family because he is in the Army. I miss him so much!!

I love the comment you left on both of the time management videos. Time management was hard for me at first, but now, it's getting better. I do tasks and assignments better when I have a deadline to go by.

I really had a great time reading your blog post! =)
